Introduction -

Leonid performing surgery on himself 

 Leonid rogozov was a soviet russian doctor and comes under one of the doctors who have performed a surgery on their own body in emergency situations .

What surgery was he was going to do ?

He was going to do a Appendectomy on himself .

• Appendectomy - This is an operation in which there is removal of infected appendix( appendicitis ) from the , there could be many reasons like infection and inflammation in the appendix and etc....
• Appendicitis - Inflammation of the appendix 
• Appendix - This is a pouch which is attached to the large intestine and it sits in the lower right part of the abdomen .  One of the main identicsl point is mc burneys point .
• Mc burneys point - this is a point which is located to the lower right side of umbilicus ( belly button ) , which is point where there will be tenderness and pain when a person is suffering from appendicitis , but initially the pain occurs around the umbilicus then it spreads to the mc burneys point .

Why he had to do the surgery himself ?

He had to do the surgery by himself because he was on a expidition in Antarctica , during which he fell severly ill and the cause was appendicitis ( it is an emergency condition in which apendectomy should be done as soon as possible otherwise the appendix may burst which may lead to may complications like septic shock or septicemia ) and there were no other doctor on the expidition except himself and as it was an emergency he had to do the surgery by himself with the help of two non medical people .

Events happened during surgery :-

• The duration of the surgery was approx 2 hours 
• First rogozov injected local Anaesthesia then gave an incision of 10 - 12 cm approx and by mistake he has cut his small intestine , so he had to stich it up .
• His bleeding was quite heavy , he grew weaker and weaker as the surgery was progressing .
• He took brake for very 20 - 30 seconds after 4 - 5 minutes .
• Finally he saw his infected appendix which appearing blue in colour means it was ready to burst by seeing which he understood that if he would was a day then it would  burst .
• Then finally the appendix was removed successfully and leonid was back to work after two weeks of recovery .
